Transit of Venus

Students at Palm Beach State School recently witnessed a once in a life time event with the 2012 Transit of Venus on June 6th. Using the schools own reflector telescope, pin hole cameras and a #18 welding mask this wonder of the natural world was viewed for several hours as the tiny planet Venus made its way across the disc of the sun.  Using the telescope allowed the students to view this phenomenon safely and in large scale. The planet appeared as large as a one cent piece. Students were also able to view sun spots and see the rotation of the sun throughout the day. Palm Beach State School Teacher Ms Tracey Newton photographed the transit with her iPhone.
